Case study

First UK installation of Powrmatic's nighttime heat harvesting system

Overview

When Graphic Packaging International expanded its Bristol operations with a new warehouse, the building needed a heating system that could operate reliably across a large, open space with changing airflow and frequent operational activity.

The challenge wasn’t just generating heat, but distributing it evenly and efficiently without disrupting the environment. Alongside that, the wider installation involved new gas mains, electrical integration across multiple systems, and measures to reduce heat loss at key access points. The aim was to create a system that would support comfort, efficiency, and long-term building performance.

The solution

UES delivered the full design and installation of a bespoke warm air heating system tailored to the warehouse layout and operating needs. Working closely with Powrmatic, we installed a low-velocity setup with 680kW burners to provide steady, even heat distribution across the space.

Our mechanical and electrical teams managed the wider infrastructure works, including routing new gas mains around existing services, connecting all plant components, and integrating the system with the site’s controls network. We also installed a high-performance air barrier above the main warehouse door to help reduce heat loss during vehicle movement.

The project also included the first UK installation of Powrmatic’s nighttime heat harvesting system, designed to recirculate naturally warmed air after hours and help maintain internal temperatures without additional energy use.

The result

The completed system now provides consistent, efficient heating throughout the new warehouse, helping improve working conditions while reducing operational energy consumption.

For UES, the project is a strong example of how large-scale heating systems can be designed to do more than meet demand. With the right approach, they can also improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance the building's long-term performance.
